- The Toyota FT-86 II Concept will debut at the 2011 Geneva Auto Show in March.
- While labeled a "concept," the car previews the production Toyota FT-86.
- Toyota had little to say about the FT-86 II Concept, except to say it gives "the clearest indication yet of the final design for Toyota's next sports car."
GENEVA — The Toyota FT-86 II Concept was teased on Wednesday ahead of its 2011 Geneva Auto Show world debut, but the single image reveals little more than a bit of the front end and the headlights.
Toyota had little to say about the car, which it is still calling a "concept," except to note that the teaser image gives "the clearest indication yet of the final design for Toyota's next sports car." It has also added the Roman numeral II to the nameplate. This latest FT-86 Concept is an evolution of the earlier concept shown at the 2009 Tokyo Auto Show.
Earlier this month, Subaru confirmed that it will unveil its companion to the FT-86 sport coupe — the so-called "Toyobaru" — at the 2011 Geneva Auto Show. The official name: Subaru Rear-Wheel Drive Sports Car Technology Concept.
It is expected that the production Toyota FT-86 will debut under the Scion brand by the end of the year. No confirmation yet on powertrain or other specifications.

I really hope it isn't badged as a Scion when the production version is revealed.

That is one mean looking car... A 200hp I4 OR Flat-4 would be enough for me. Anything more would just be more icing on the cake. Sad that this car literally gives us (enthusiasts) exactly what we want out of a car company (light, affordable alternative RWD car to give us a break from our FWD cruiser) and still I see hateful comments. You asked for this. Now embrace it. Don't down talk just because it has a curvy "T" on the hood and not a blue oval, or slanted "H". The Mazda MX-5 only bangs 167hp, starts at 21,000. If you option it up to 30,000 you'll still get the same 2.0L 4 pot under the hood. Lets not be bias. It's a good car in my book (just like the MX-5) and yes, I would probably get one when it comes out. And if they offer a turbo version I'd get two........ maybe not two, but you get my point.

I'm pretty excited to see what becomes of this car. I think its either going to be a huge success or a flop depending on its price/power. No middle ground here.
I've had to replace 3 Subaru head gaskets in the last 5 years, so I have to say that I'm not all that excited about the Subaru engine. If this car is destined to have a N/A 4 banger, I really wish that Toyota had collaborated with Yamaha to develop another 4A-GE or 2zz-GE
That would have been fitting since they have been calling the concept the FT-86.

The front overhang is rather large for a rear-wheel-drive vehicle.
Too bad Toyota and M-B have given up on I6 engines. I hope BMW isn't the next to do so.

I'll bet the Camry's improved speed is related to the gearing and 6 speed automatic used. I think fastest in class demonstrates the family sedan's recent appropriate on MPG rather than 0-60.
The stated output is similar to the base WRX (which no Camry can catch 0-60 or turning). I also like the H4 sound better. Most buyers of a small sports car don't care as much about smooth, more about exhaust note, road feel, etc.
That said, I do miss the very smooth I6 from the Supra

* Looks promising but if/when Hyundai puts the 4-cyl Turbo for ~270hp and class leading fuel efficiency IN ITS GENESIS COUPE, this Toyotabaru will be yet another footnote in Toyotas history.

In breaking headlines, Toyota has just recalled another 1.1mn vehicles in JAPAN for engines that leak oil. Since Toyota is likely a sponsor of IL, no wonder it hasn't been posted anywhere here. Was out yesterday. Brings the global recall to ~11~13mn vehicles. So what's another 1mn vehicles anyways..

If the production car very closely resembles the concept car, it will have little appeal to me. Actually the side view shown in the article doesn't look bad, but pictures of the concept from other angles turn me off. In fairness, I'll wait to reserve judgement till I can see one in person.

Sorry. Toyota is (and has been) off my shopping list for quite a while now.
Hey Toyota, Where are you going to save the next hundred bucks per car? Plastic lug nuts?
