Toyota FT-86: Late To Launch

    Just the Facts:
    • Toyota's FT-86 sport coupe may be delayed until 2013.
    • Reports also say the FT-86 may be redesigned into a hybrid.
    • Toyota is reportedly targeting the $22,000 price range for the future FT-86 in Japan.

TOKYO — Toyota's FT-86 sport coupe, eagerly awaited by fans and shown in concept form last fall at the 2009 Tokyo Auto Show, is reportedly being delayed and won't come out before 2013. That disheartening news comes from Best Car magazine in Japan.

The publication also says that, before the FT-86 is shown at the 2011 Tokyo Auto Show, Toyota may redesign it as a hybrid in the style of the Honda CR-Z. In any case, when it comes out, Toyota is reportedly targeting the $22,000 price range in Japan.

The Toyota/Subaru project was shown as the FT-86 G Sports Concept at the Tokyo Auto Salon tuner show in January with a turbocharged Subaru boxer four under the hood.

If this is true--I guess this gives Honda more time to get the CR-
Z right (ie. add a gasoline SI version).  I'm disappointed as non-hybrid version that was proposed would have been a great car for the price.  Hopefully, the car will be released next year or sooner.

If this to be remotely sporty, they'd better not make it a hybrid.

seems a wasted opportunity for a new century Celica. Under 2750 ilbs.........1.8 litre 16 valve direct injected VVT ..........20k start with 6 or 7 spd dsg rwd and awd optional.

I remember a Toyota that offered Supras,Celicas,MR2 and sport Corollas all in the same year lineup........now you are offered a "S" matrix or corolla and thats supposed to suffice...........?

I've never trusted bestcar mag rumor. If it have redesign, why would they showed the concept? even G sport concept with turbo charger TMIC. Autocar also interviewed a designer from ED2, he said the car will start production at the end of 2011, and hit the showroom at 2012. There is no way  a TMZ of auto mag is more trustful than a person from Toyota himself.

It was reported elsewhere that they were going to completely redesign the car. I am afraid they are a little to far along to do that, and it was very well received anyway.

'If they're going to make it into a hybrid, all I can say is: "Thanks for killing the 86 Toyota."'

Exactly right.  I had such high hopes for this car.  Lightweight, RWD and priced right.  And the concept is damn good looking - especially for a Toyota.

In other words, the wait BETTER be worth it.

If it ever really becomes a hybrid, then it had better arrive as a damned fast one.
