- Toyota's new Etios sedan launched today in India.
- The Etios starts just under $11,000.
- The sedan will be joined next spring by the new Etios Liva hatchback.
MUMBAI, India — The Toyota Etios, unveiled earlier this year at the 2010 New Delhi Auto Show, goes on sale today in India, priced from just under $11,000. The small entry-level sedan will be joined in April by a hatchback companion, dubbed the Etios Liva.
The Etios is being pitched at such competitors in the same price bracket as the Suzuki Swift Dzire and Tata Manza, while the Liva will square off against the new Honda Brio that arrives in mid-2011.
The Etios will be equipped with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, while the base Liva will get a 1.2-liter unit.
Both cars will be built at Toyota Kirloskar's new Bidadi plant. Toyota said the Etios platform will also provide the base next year for a new model in Brazil.
Inside Line says: That the starting price of basic entry-level cars from the leading Japanese brands is still over $10,000 is stark testimony to Tata's cost-conscious Nano. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
