    • A problem with the engine control module may lead to engine stalling.
    • No other Toyota or Lexus models are affected by the recall.
    • Three accidents have been reported that may be related to the problem.

TORRANCE, California — Toyota will recall 1.13 million of its Corolla products to fix a problem with the engine control module that may lead to engine stalling. The recall, announced Thursday, affects 2005-'08 model-year Corolla and Matrix cars sold in North America.

Toyota says the ECMs on the vehicles "may have been improperly manufactured." The automaker says no other models from Toyota or Lexus are involved in the problem, which affects two-wheel-drive cars with the 1ZZ-FE engine. Three accidents have been reported that may be related to the problem, including one "minor injury," Toyota said.

The problem is a crack that may develop "at certain solder points or on the electronic component used to protect circuits against excessive voltage (varistor), on the ECM's circuit board." If this happens, the "check engine" light may come on, shifting may become "harsh" or the engine may not start. Toyota says it is possible "in limited instances" that the engine could stall while the vehicle is in use.

Toyota will mail out notifications in mid-September to owners and will replace the ECM on the affected vehicles at no charge. Owners can call Toyota at (800) 331-4331 or go to Toyota's recall Web site for more information.

Why not just hide this defect in another Toyota company memo?  Then lie to the American public and say its the drivers fault.  Isn't that Toyota policy?
