CHANGCHUN, China — Toyota has restarted construction of a $555-million plant in northern China, in partnership with FAW Group, one of the country's largest automakers.
Sichuan FAW Toyota, which currently assembles the Prius and the Land Cruiser, is building the plant in Changchun, near FAW's headquarters. Initially, the factory will have the capacity to build 100,000 Corollas a year, beginning in the first half of 2012.
Construction was delayed last year during the global financial crisis. When the plant is completed, it will give Toyota annual production capacity in China of nearly 1 million vehicles.
Toyota operates several joint-venture plants with FAW. In addition, it has an alliance in the south, with Guangzhou Auto.
FAW is also partnered with Volkswagen and Mazda.
