Unveiled: 2009 Toyota Corolla
When the 2009 Corolla goes on sale in the U.S. in February, it will offer a new DOHC 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine — essentially a slightly detuned version of the RAV4's base power plant — in addition to a redesigned DOHC 1.8-liter unit. The new 2.4 is rated at 158 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, while the new 1.8 is rated at 132 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque.
The 10th-generation Corolla doesn't look like a radical departure from its predecessor. But Toyota nevertheless has made some substantial improvements in content, fuel economy, safety, and passenger and luggage space.
The '09 Corolla comes in five trim levels: Standard, LE, XLE, S and XRS. The latter two sporty versions get a front underbody spoiler, foglamps, rocker moldings, plus upper and lower rear spoilers.
All Corollas get standard front and side airbags, as well as side curtain bags. Antilock brakes are standard on all models, and stability and traction control is an option on lower grades.
The top-of-the-line Corolla XRS, as you might expect, is the best-dressed. Standard features include sport bucket seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift lever, P215/45R17 tires and alloy wheels, sport strut-tower brace, chrome exhaust tip and other accents.
What this means to you: Even in a new wrapper, Velveeta still looks like Velveeta.
