Toyota Releases Pricing on 2009 Corolla and Matrix - and Releases a Special-Edition FJ Cruiser

TORRANCE, Calif. — Toyota has announced pricing for its all-new 2009 models of the Corolla and Matrix. The Corolla — the 10th generation of the popular small car — starts at $15,910, including a $660 destination charge. The Matrix starts at $16,850, including $660 destination. The new models go on sale in February.

Toyota is also releasing a special 2008 FJ Cruiser Trail Teams Edition, billed as "a new level of customization" for the four-wheel-drive models of the FJ Cruiser. The special edition was displayed at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show earlier this month.

The Corolla will come in five trim levels, from Standard to XRS. The pricing tops out at $20,610, including destination. Engine choices include a 132-horsepower 16-valve 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and a 2.4-liter four that makes 158 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. The sporty S and XRS models have an aerodynamic body kit including front and upper and lower rear spoilers and rocker molding. XLE and S level Corollas get 16-inch wheels and tires, and the XRS level gets 17-inch tires with alloy wheels.

The 2009 Matrix comes in three levels: Standard, S and XRS. It has a top price of $22,510, including destination. The new model's exterior is intended to be more coupelike, with "a wider, lower stance" that includes more rounded rear windows and "continuous character lines" from the front grille to the A-pillar. Inside, there are new "sport seats" and a folding tonneau cover.

The same two engine choices from the Corolla are available on the Matrix. All-wheel drive is an option on the Matrix S equipped with the 2.4-liter engine and Super ECT four-speed transmission.

The FJ Cruiser Trail Teams Edition, limited to 3,200 units, has a "monotone white" roof and body with black trim, Trail Teams badging and other cosmetic touches. It also gets Bilstein "trail-tuned" shock absorbers and BFGoodrich Rugged Trail tires with custom 16-inch TRD alloy wheels.

It's priced at a $4,755 premium beyond the FJ Cruiser's base price of $24,410 for the manual-transmission model. The model with automatic transmission costs $5,110 above the $24,820 base price. Both prices include a $685 destination charge. It will be on sale by early February, Toyota says.
