TORRANCE, California — Toyota said on Thursday that it's going to pull forward the on-sale date for the redesigned 2012 Camry by about two weeks, with cars arriving in showrooms in mid-September.

The on-sale date for the 2012 Camry had been targeted for early October.

In its August sales conference call, Toyota told the media that earlier sales of the 2012 Camry are being made possible because the "sell-down of the 2011 Camry is going extremely well."

Toyota said it sold 30,185 2011 Camry and Camry Hybrids in August compared with 30,764 in August 2010, a drop of 5.7 percent.

Jeff Bracken, vice president of sales for Toyota's U.S. division, said that compared to year ago levels, sales were down 16 percent on a daily selling rate basis as "dealers continued to operate with less than ideal inventory levels."

He said all North American production will return to normal levels in September, for the first time since the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

With most of Toyota's North American plants now running at maximum operating rates, Toyota projects that production for the second half of 2011 will "now actually exceed initial plans."

Bracken said Toyota dealer inventories should "grow in September for the first time since the twin disasters in Japan disrupted production."

Toyota is already building the new Camry at its Georgetown, Kentucky factory.

Inside Line says: A bit of good news for those anxious to get their hands on the 2012 Toyota Camry.

This version poses no more "threat" than the previous model. It will remain the top seller and after an initial new model pop up, it's share will decline. Toyota will have to do something innovative in it's mid model update, or by the time this new generation ends its run it will be in 2nd or third place. The market is improving faster than Toyota has in this segment, and hopefully Toyota will respond with better product.

As far as associating nationalities with market leadership, it makes for a nice song and little else.

Someone needs to get their math right........

1.9% drop sounds about right.  Needless to say, not as bad as it originally sounds.

Hmm... if you made that grille area silver and sort of blocked off, it kinda looks like an Acura TSX.

This new Camry will pose a huge challenge to Detriot 3 and Hyundai and similar challenges will happen in other cars' segments sooner or later. Instead of employing marketing tricks, Toyota has been using unmatchable technologies advancement to crush its competitors.

In general, just as Japanese appliances are 2 to 3 times more expensive than its nearest competitors, so right now these cars are still considerably very cheap, big bargains.

YAWN!  Even the "sporty" SE model looks boring... they did NOTHING with the "greenhouse" or side profile of the car.... and the front end looks more like a Corolla than before.  This car will sell, but grows more & more "middle-of-the road", a weaker competitor versus Malibu, Sonata & Fusion.  It will stop the sales decline for awhile, but after a year get ready, they will have to discount it to sell it........
