2008 Paris Auto Show Preview: Toyota Sets Three Premieres

PARIS — Toyota has announced that it will unveil three new models at the 2008 Paris Auto Show on October 2. The trio run the gamut of the Japanese automaker's product portfolio. The flagship Avensis sedan will be shown in all-new third-generation form, as will the production version of the little low-emissions iQ four-seater. The third debut will be the all-wheel-drive Urban Cruiser.

The Avensis will be more Lexus-like with improvements to the exterior look and interior design and quality, Toyota says. The car is built in the U.K. and will go on sale in Europe in 2009.

The iQ was first shown at the 2008 Geneva Auto Show this past spring as a concept. It is, Toyota says, "the world's smallest premium four-seater ever built," and it is also a showpiece of safety features with rear-window curtain shield airbags and other active and passive safety features. It is also a low-emissions vehicle at 99 g/km, Toyota says.

Rounding out the Toyota debuts is the AWD Urban Cruiser, also a former Geneva concept. This one is an all-new "urban all-roader" with a 1.4-liter diesel engine with a rugged exterior design but low emissions at 133 g/km for, Toyota says, "tomorrow's low-carbon society."

The iQ and Urban Cruiser are both expected to go into production in 2009, British media are reporting.
