HAWTHORNE, California — The Tesla Model X has been teased ahead of the its February debut, showing the electric crossover's silhouette and a portion of the grille.
The Model X teaser was revealed in an official invitation to its unveiling on February 9 at the Tesla L.A. Design Studio in Hawthorne, California. The invitation was mailed to registered Tesla fans.
The teaser shows a crossover with a sleek profile and a slim grille, although much of the vehicle remained hidden in the photograph.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted about the Model X on Friday, saying that "most cars are pretty blah. This is not."
He also said that the Model X unveiling will be Web cast live on teslamotors.com. The unveiling is set for 7 p.m. PST.
Musk had earlier confirmed the unveiling of the first prototype of the Model X, which the company has called "pretty revolutionary for the SUV segment." The Model X is derived from the Tesla Model S platform.
In a May 2011 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Tesla said it planned to reveal the Model X by the end of 2011. The filing said that Tesla is "designing the Model X to incorporate the functionality of a minivan with the consumer appeal of a sports-utility vehicle." It noted that the electric powertrain developed for the Tesla Roadster "has provided the foundational technology for the Model S, the Model X and for electric powertrain components that (Tesla) has begun selling to Daimler and its affiliates that (Tesla) intends to sell to Toyota."
In an interview in 2010 with Greentech Media, Musk said the Model X would be launched in 2014, about two years after the mid-2012 launch of its midsize 2013 Model S sedan.

Why promote the X when you can't even buy an S yet? They are acting like GM and talk all day long about the future products you can't buy and not about what they offer today.

They certainly do put exciting in EV, but I am not sure if this company has a future. It would be wonderful to live in a world right now where we drive these types of cars...but we need to delve deeper than the surface.
EV's are completely limited by the infrastructure and battery technology.
Tesla needs a boost...they need the battery technology to be more powerful and save space. The battery resources need to be evaluated, then re-evaluated.
The infrastructure depends on the government. The government depends on its representatives. The representatives depend...on oil.
I love what Tesla is doing, but let's not get it misconstrued, they are the underdog in this fight and will be for a while. And their "future" completely depends on their future product's predecessors.

these guys certaintly do make electric exciting. Time to produce a small sedan that could draw from that 3-series crowd, and how about a neat compact that doesn't go 160mph and cost $100K....the future of this company is bright.
