Tesla Roadster No. 1,000 Hits Detroit Auto Show, Will Be Sold for Charity

DETROIT — A Millennial White Tesla Roadster Sport bearing VIN no. 1,000 is on display at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show. It's the electric-car startup's 1,000th production vehicle off the line. The car will be on display at the show through January 24 alongside the second model from Tesla, the Roadster S, which is making its debut here.

As of one year ago, Tesla CEO Elon Musk notes, the company had delivered "about 150" of the cars to customers. He called the 1,000th car "a humble but important milestone."

The 1,000th Tesla has a "unique interior" and carbon-fiber accents and an MSRP of $175,000.

Tesla Motors says it will give proceeds from the roadster's sale to a group of Detroit-area charities, including food charity Forgotten Harvest, the Sierra Club, the National Wildlife Federation and two well-established Detroit community groups, FOCUS: Hope and the Children's Center.

Along with car no. 1,000 in the Tesla booth at Detroit is an Arctic White Roadster Sport, car no. 750, which was driven 2,700 miles cross-country from Tesla headquarters to Detroit for the show.

The automaker says its employees drove it "through nine states, three time zones and two snowstorms — without a drop of gasoline."
