Tesla Motors Says It Has More Than 1,000 Reservations for Model S

SAN CARLOS, California — In an indication of how receptive the buying public seems to be when it comes to electric vehicles, Tesla Motors on Tuesday said that more than 1,000 consumers have plunked down a $5,000 reservation fee on its upcoming Model S sedan. The number is impressive, given that Model S production is not slated to begin until late 2011.

Tesla introduced the Model S on March 26. It is priced at $49,900 after a federal tax credit.

In a recent blog posting on the Tesla Motors corporate Web site, the Model S was described as "the volume base from which we will build the Tesla brand," by Franz von Holzhausen, who is in charge of Tesla design. He called the Model S "a face for the Tesla brand" and described it as an "insanely functional car."

The Model S carries up to seven passengers and travels up to 300 miles per charge.

The Model S is already on its way to being embedded in the public's imagination, thanks to an April 29 appearance on CBS' Late Show with David Letterman.
