SAN CARLOS, California — Tesla Motors continues to spurn the classic Big Three playbook, this time by hiring a former Google/YouTube executive to lead its communications effort. Tesla on Monday announced that Google executive Ricardo Reyes, 35, will be its new vice president for communications starting in mid-September.

Reyes, who was head of global communications and public affairs at YouTube, will make his auto-industry debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show, Tesla Motors said in a statement. The electric startup described Reyes as "the perfect person for a fast-paced, high-profile company like ours."

"This is further evidence that Tesla is aggressively recruiting from both Silicon Valley and the traditional automotive industry to build the best possible team," the automaker said in a statement.

Reyes will be charged with overseeing the media launch of the upcoming Tesla Model S.

Inside Line says: We expect some out-of-the-box thinking from Reyes as Tesla continues to roll out new models. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
