Suzuki SX concept
What's special about it?
Suzuki motocross rider Travis Pastrana wowed journalists with a high-flying freestyle jump over the new SX, nailing home the concept's emphasis on attracting active lifestyle individuals. Once the roar of the engine had faded, Suzuki President Rick Suzuki got down to business and discussed the details of the company's latest concept.
The SX combines the performance of a sport sedan with the practicality and versatility of a five-door hatchback. To accomplish this, Suzuki equipped the SX with an all-aluminum supercharged 2.0-liter engine that produces 220 horsepower. All-wheel drive and meaty 17-inch wheels and tires give the SX a sure-footed grip of the road, while four-wheel disc brakes and an advanced ABS system bring things to a halt.
The sport theme of the SX is continued inside with a yellow and black color scheme and gleaming metal accents throughout. The front seats get their own colors to emphasize that, while the SX can carry five passengers, the emphasis is still on the driver. The all-digital instrument panel also gets yellow and gray accents in addition to a competition-inspired bar graph tachometer. An LCD screen in the dash incorporates an advanced GPS navigation system as well as functioning as a TV and information center for the radio and CD player.
Why should you care?
The hybrid sport wagon is quickly emerging as the new hot category -- witness the recent introduction of Pontiac's Vibe and Toyota's Matrix. Suzuki has responded not only with the SX concept, but also by announcing that it plans to release a production car based on the SX in early 2002. If it has power anywhere near the SX and keeps just a few of the trick features, it should make for a very interesting battle with Pontiac and Toyota. --Ed Hellwig
