LONDON — Suzuki has released images of the redesigned Swift that will go on sale this fall in Europe. The third-generation Swift hatchback will be assembled at Suzuki's plant in Esztergom, Hungary.

The new Swift, which supplants a version launched in 2005, is longer, wider and taller than its predecessor, with a wider track and larger-diameter wheels and tires.

The car's 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine is being replaced by a smaller, cleaner and more powerful 1.2-liter unit that produces 92 horsepower and 87 pound-feet of torque. Average fuel economy improves to 47 mpg.

Suzuki said it will add a 1.3-liter clean diesel in early 2011.

The Swift has not been sold in the U.S. since 2001. Currently, the $14,000 SX4 anchors the low end of the brand's U.S. product range.

Inside Line says: Suzuki isn't talking yet, but don't be surprised to see a version of the new Swift arrive in North America in the not-too-distant future. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent

I want to rent one when I go to Italy in September.  Then I'll want one when I get home!  Unless someone else can think of a new, relatively lightweight car that gets 30+ mpg and costs under $18k?

The 7/8 size predecessor has been in Europe since 2005 and the euro mags love it. The Swift Sport had a 1.5 125hp DOHC and stiffer all around. As good as a Mini Cooper for far less. We will be lucky when this does get here as the handling is outstanding. If they bump the engine to a 1.6 ( likely) , 6spd auto and manual and say 135hp-140hp many of you smuglies will be eating your words. It will be here by about spring 2011.

Is Suzuki still selling cars here?  I thougth Mitsubishi and Suzuki went the way of Isuzu, Daewoo, and Diahatsu.  I cant tell you the last time I saw one of them on the road not to mention I wouldnt know where to get one or have it serviced.

I have driven the suzuki 1.3 in the previous gen car sold in Europe. Its not weak at all for the car but you have to get the stick.

Very funny,in China,the"1.3-liter four-cylinder engine " ,which is based on an old machine ,is made by changan, not suzuki.Where is the engine from in the States market?

The swift has been sold in Canada for the past... many years. It's the exact same vehicle as the Chevrolet Aveo. Equally as crappy.

I guess Canada is more European than the US.

i hope they keep it very fuel efficient if they bring it to the States....or at least bring the plug-in hybrid version.

Wouldn't sell well here compared to its competitors like the Kia Soul unless its priced very well.

bring it, the swift from the 90's was a likable car and Suzuki has shown it can make a good car when daewoo isn't building it. the only thing they will probably need to change is the motor. it would need at least 100hp for us greedy Americans
