2008 New Delhi Auto Show: Suzuki Concept A-Star

NEW DELHI — Flashing lights and loud music at Maruti Suzuki's press conference for the new Concept A-Star at the New Delhi Auto Show acted as a none-too-subtle reminder that this Indo-Japanese company controls over 50 percent of the Indian passenger car market.

The A-Star, which made its international debut in New Delhi, will be manufactured in India and sold globally, beginning in October of this year.

Shinzo Nakanishi, managing director of Maruti Suzuki India, said that production of the A-Star will be initially for India, before it's exported to markets in Europe and Asia. Powered as it is by a tiny 1.0-liter gas-powered engine, U.S. sales of a Suzuki-badged version of the A-Star are highly unlikely.

A stylistic flourish with an Indian paisley design is worked into the A-Star's taillights.

What this means to you: The chunky proportions of the little four-door hatchback bring a smile to my face. — Nick Kurczewski, AutoObserver Correspondent
