"If the sensor was improperly installed, vehicle handling characteristics during hard braking, sudden turns or other quick maneuvers could cause the vehicle to react in an unexpected manner or result in unstable handling," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "Under extreme conditions, the driver could lose control of the vehicle, and a crash could occur."
In other documentation filed with NHTSA, Subaru said there are no known reports of any crashes or injuries in the U.S. from this defect.
"However, a report was received in the U.S. in September 2008 that upon moderate acceleration, the vehicle involved experienced a loss of power," Subaru reported. "Upon further investigation of this claim, it was found that the VDG G sensor was improperly installed."
Dealers will check the position of the sensor in question. If it is found to be correctly installed, no further action will be needed. If it is installed improperly, it will be reinstalled in the correct position. The recall will begin on December 19.
