TOKYO — The four-passenger Subaru Plug-in Stella electric vehicle took a major step toward reality with the news that it will be introduced this summer in Japan. Parent Fuji Heavy Industries said just 15 units of the vehicle will be provided to Japan's government for verification testing.

The Japanese automaker has been tinkering with the Stella electric vehicle for some time. The latest model increases power output from 40kW to 47 kW. Fuji Heavy Industries also noted that its body weight has been decreased. "Specifications of a production EV model, which will be introduced this summer, are basically identical to those of this model," it said in a statement describing the latest prototype.

The front-wheel-drive vehicle, which uses lithium-ion batteries, has a maximum speed of 62 mph and a per-charge driving distance of just under 50 miles.

Fuji Heavy Industries said it plans to test-market production EV models starting in July in Japan. Some 170 units of the EV are planned to be delivered "during this fiscal year."

"Pricing, selling system and after-sales service are now under study," it said.
