    What is it?
    Subaru ST-X<

    What's special about it?
The ST-X is a new type of crossover vehicle that blends the versatility of a four-door pickup truck with the performance and comfort of a sedan. Designed in the United States, the four-passenger ST-X (Subaru Truck X-perimental) promises utility, performance and fun. The 55.5-inch cargo bed can be extended to 76 inches. But rather than adding length via a dropped tailgate, the ST-X features a power-retractable rear window that lowers completely into the rear seatback. The rear headrests, which pivot down from the roof, fold up and out of the way. The seat cushion folds up and forward, its bottom forming the new rear wall of the cargo bed. The seatback then folds down to form a flat cargo floor. Power comes from a supercharged version of the 2.5-liter engine found in the Subaru Legacy. It develops 230 horsepower. Like all Subaru models sold in North America, the ST-X features all-wheel drive. It also has a dual-range five-speed transmission and 8.5 inches of ground clearance.

    Why should you care?
If Subaru were to build a production model off the ST-X, it would be another entry into the growing hybrid market. Subaru has been doing quite well with its Outback and Forester models. As both of these are car-based alternatives to SUVs, the ST-X makes sense as a car-based alternative to sport-utility trucks.
