CHERRY HILL, New Jersey — Subaru has begun offering mobile WiFi on the 2011 Outback. Available as a dealer- or port-installed accessory, the Subaru Mobile Internet system costs $499, plus a $35 activation fee, and requires a one-year subscription at $29 per month.
The 3G service, provided by Autonet Mobile, creates a WiFi hotspot inside the car, enabling Internet access for passengers as well as anyone within 150 feet of the vehicle.
Multiple passengers can access the hotspot from a wide range of devices, including Apple's iPad, iPhone and iPod, to surf the Web, check e-mail and post to social network sites such as Twitter and Facebook.
Inside Line says: Watch this service expand rapidly to other makes and models. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent

If I remember correctly, Ford's coming setup will allow you to sign up for any service of your own, rather than be bound to a service through them. That would be more versatile than Subaru's system, I think.

Nice for road trips - kids can go on hulu... spouse can too. If it works with laptops, which it'd better to be useful at all.

What a rip off! Have they not heard that most people who could afford this already have smart phones for instant internet access?
