WASHINGTON — Subaru is recalling 809 Legacy and Outback vehicles from model years 2010 and '11 because the oil lubrication hole within the six-speed manual transmission transfer case had not been drilled, which could lead to the gears breaking, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Subaru of America also issued a stop-sale order on the affected vehicles to its U.S. dealers on July 19.
"Due to a programming error, a lubrication hole within the six-speed manual transmission was omitted," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "If the transmission gears are not properly lubricated, a groaning sound may begin to develop, alerting the driver to a problem. If this sound is ignored and no action is taken, the gears will eventually break and this condition will lead to vehicle power loss, possibly resulting in a crash."
The recall is expected to begin on August 6. Subaru dealers will repair the vehicles by drilling an oil lubrication hole, and, if necessary, replace the internal parts with new ones free of charge. Subaru of America also issued a letter to its U.S. dealers, telling them that affected vehicles with 6,250 or more miles will require replacement of the main shaft and 3rd through 6th gearset, according to other documentation filed with the federal government.
Subaru recalled 29,443 of its 2010 Legacy and Outback vehicles in May because of a potential fluid leak in the CVT hose that could result in a crash, according to NHTSA.
Subaru owners can contact the automaker at (800) 782-2783.

The 2010 is comfortable, functional, well appointed, economical, reliable, safety minded, agile and quick enough, especially with the six. And,in my opinion, beautiful. If you didn't feel it, you shouldn't have signed on it.

ed124c, I am entitled to my opinion. Why is it so crazy if I dont like the rearend for the new legacy. I admire car where credit is due. Subaru made the car too big to sell it to the masses.

I have a "fugly" Legacy. My first one. Over time, I don't notice it as much. I think most '10 owners will acknowledge that the '09 is better looking. But the larger size of the '10 is what made the sale. I would have been perfectly fine if they had just made the '09 larger.
The Subie loyalists hate the idea that Subaru sold the enthusiasts out to get more mom and pop drivers. But this strategy brings the cash in and with higher production volumes, it makes it easier to justify specials like the Spec B.
Subaru has had bunch of recalls on the '10. Probably a combination of first year production and being overly cautious in avoiding the Toyota syndrom.

as with nearly every car, they look much better in person than in pictures...while I do prefer the previous gens looks, they new ones aren't that bad...and Subaru does have a habit of listening to their customers, and improving their products appropriately. Like the improvements made to the '09 wrx after people complained about the power and handling on the '08. they gave it more power, and tightened up the suspension. Now they've brought back the Sti sedan....
So i'm sure that the looks of the Legacy will improve...

@ don_83: "soul less"? Does the Camry have a 265 hp Turbo (Legacy GT) and 6 speed manual with AWD that will outperform any Camry (except for trunk room)?
Does Toyota have an AWD Camry?
Can you get a stick shift with ANY AWD Toyota? (I think only the Matrix has a stick with FWD)
Every Subaru model (except the Tribeca) has a base model with a stick shift, and a Premium trim with stick and sunroof and 10 way power seat.
Soul less? Not in my opinion.
@ most others: Save your extreme descriptions of the Legacy's styling for truly "fugly" and "hideous" cars. The Legacy is what it is-- an AWD family sedan with some mild sporting pretentions. And its looks are quite adequate, compared to the competition.

I liked the last gen spec B, this one is too big and the back looks hideous.
Subaru Legacy and Mazda 6 have given up to compete with the soul less Camry.

This model are making record sales for Subaru, so they are doing something right. I can maybe understand the whole "alienating your enthusiast audience" point of view, but the fact is Subaru has created a product that consumers really want. The factory is even having a hard time keeping up with demand! The Legacy 2.5GT turbo manual model still exists and the WRX and STI are still very present, so Subaru is still paying attention to their enthusiast roots.

All Subaru's should have their owners recalled for having bad taste in cars.

I have a last gen Legacy, damn good looking for what it is. I thought Subaru had finally found its signature styling. Boy was I wrong. I'll never buy one of these new fugly Legacys. Note to Subaru, Legacy drivers want performance w/ more comfort and refinement a la Lexus. Stop pushing your vision of Camry on us. Even the Camry looks sportier....
