WASHINGTON — Subaru is recalling 70,000 of its 2010 Legacy and Outback cars to replace the steering column electrical roll connector, the automaker confirmed for Inside Line on Monday. The defect — a broken wire in the flat electrical cable of the steering roll connector — can cause a problem with the operation of the airbag, paddle shifters, horn and/or steering-wheel-mounted audio controls. The recall will begin on July 1.
"It was discovered in house — no injuries reported or anything like that," wrote Heather Ward, Subaru spokesperson, in response to an e-mailed query from Inside Line. "It's a quick fix (less than an hour) and we want owners whose vehicles fall in the following VIN ranges to get it checked out: 2010 Legacy A*210001 through A*2444529 and 2010 Outback A*310001 through A*377827."
It is the second recall for the 2010 Legacy and Outback. In May, Subaru recalled 29,443 vehicles to fix a crack in the CVT cooler hose that could result in a fluid leak.
Subaru owners can contact the automaker at (800) 782-2783 for more information.
Inside Line says: If you own one of the aforementioned Subaru vehicles, have it checked out with your dealer ASAP. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
