NEW YORK — Subaru released a photo of the redesigned 2012 Impreza sedan, ahead of the car's unveiling at the upcoming 2011 New York Auto Show.
Subaru provided scant details on the redesigned Impreza, other than to say both four- and five-door models will make their world debut at the New York auto show, and that the new model will have a highway fuel-economy rating of 36 mpg, highest of any all-wheel-drive car sold in the U.S.
The company also said the new Impreza will have "a roomier interior and improved levels of comfort and refinement."
The fourth-generation Impreza, which goes on sale later this year in the U.S. as a 2012 model, is expected to feature Subaru's new-generation four-cylinder boxer engine, which will be offered in displacements of 2.0 and 2.5 liters. Subaru said output on the 2.0 engine remains the same, at 146 horsepower, while torque climbs from 141 to 145 pound-feet.
A version of the same boxer engine will power Subaru's new rear-wheel-drive sports car previewed at the recent 2011 Geneva Auto Show.
Inside Line says: The latest iteration of the Impreza looks considerably more mature than its predecessors. But will it still provide a solid foundation for a new WRX? — Paul Lienert, Correspondent

What is the transmission in the new Impreza? If it is the same 4 speed auto that Subaru has been flogging for nearly 20 years, forget it. Subarus have been held back in both performance and economy by antiquated automatic transmissions for years. They are way overdue for some serious improvements across their entire model line in this area.

I agree it does look like your typical Japanese "vanilla" cars that will age far better than anything from the Big 3 "retro" American cars or even the overstyled Korean cars.
They may not be thrilling to look at but the Accord, Camry, Civic, Impreza, Legacy, etc. look far better 5 years after purchase than any of the turds coming out of Detroit.

It appears that its body design is probably no better or worse than the previous version, depending on personal preferences.
The improved MPG is probably a trade off for reduced power. The 2008-2011 Impreza's 170 HP is already only adequate. I would rather see a hybrid version that does not compromise power.
Subaru is taking too long to offer hybrids. And, if Subaru's hybrids are going to be not all-wheel drive, I will not be interested. In that case, I would probably buy a Honda hybrid.

I kinda like it and believe it is an improvement but it looks too much like Mazda3 sedan (front fenders, roof line and c-pillar, etc.).
I am interested in the wrX hatch anyway, I hope it looks much better than this.

I see the 2008 to present Honda Accord all over this. Where's the excitement; only in the engine?

I have a feeling I've seen these lines before... Lexus comes to mind. Nothing new in the exterior design here.

Its annoying how car models just get larger and larger over the years.

I think we should all wait until we see the car. This "photo" looks pretty rendered to me. Especially the wheels. I will hold off on my love or hate until the car is actually unveiled. Imagine that? 36MPG sounds great. Even if it gets 30 that would be a massive improvement. That is the biggest gripe I have with my 06 Imprezza 2.5i. Miserable fuel economy even for an AWD vehicle. I also would hope a CVT or 5-speed tranny is introduced.
As for the HP, I do not understand. My car has 170+ HP in the base engine. When did they get so much less HP in the base models?
