CHERRY HILL, New Jersey — The 2012 Subaru Impreza gets a modest price increase and a new top-of-the-line 2012 Impreza Sport Limited model that starts at $23,345, including shipping. The 2012 Impreza will go on sale in November.
The base 2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i with a five-speed manual transmission starts at $18,245, including a $750 destination charge, reflecting a $25 price increase. The increase is due to a hike in the destination charge, which was $725 on the 2011 Impreza.
The 2012 Subaru Impreza Sport Limited is a five-door-only model that gets standard leather seats, an all-weather package and alloy wheels.
The 2012 Impreza is also offered in 2.0i Premium, Sport Premium and Limited models, as the Japanese automaker takes the Impreza further upscale. The Limited is a new addition for the 2012 model year. The 2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i Limited starts at $22,345, including shipping, for the four-door model and $22,845 for the five-door version.
The 2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i Sport Premium starts at $21,045 and is only offered in the five-door body style.
The Impreza gets a new 148-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine for 2012. The EPA has yet to post official fuel-economy numbers for the 2012 Impreza, but Subaru estimated that the 2.0-liter engine will return 27 mpg in city driving and 36 mpg on the highway.
Inside Line says: Expect to pay a $5,000 premium if you want that top-of-the-line 2012 Impreza.

@dhectorg,blueguydotcom,jscion The reason the Impreza (and other compact cars) have a 5 speed vs a 6 is torque. A sixth gear would cause the engine to spin too slow to generate enough torque to actually keep the car at a decent cruising speed, let alone accelerate. Like @awd_turbo said, the thing is barely adequate as it is (I live in Wisconsin, where the elevation is only 1000 or so feet, so I don't have the high altitude issues). Subaru could go the route of some other manufacturers and put a 6 speed in with a shorter overall final drive ratio, where 6th gear in that scenario would spin the engine just as fast as the current set-up's 5th gear.
The STI can get away with a 6 speed because it has about twice as much power/torque as this 2.0L. Remember, the WRX has a 5 speed but is still .3 seconds faster to 60 than it's 6 speed STI cousin, so more gears isn't always better.
The guys building these cars know what they're doing.

I had high hopes for this car, but the chunky monkey styling of especially the 5 door is a real turn off....we own 3 Subies currently. Look at how cool the Focus hatch looks. Subaru must have hired a wino Italian designer for this one.

This pricing is actually better than I expected for an all new design (which usually guarantees a substantial increase). It'll probably wind up around $25k for a loaded sport limited 5-door with a 5-spd, which is definitely competitive! Unlike most of the idiot fanboys out there trashing this car, I LOVE the 2012 redesign. It's exactly what Subaru needed to do to make the Impreza a real player in the compact segment. Offering 30+ MPG on top of AWD will give them a serious edge in a very competitive segment. I only have 2 complaints with this car...
1) Any new engine in this day and age should have direct injection right out of the box. It does add a little cost, but it also offers 10% gain in fuel economy and power output, so it's definitely worth it! I suspect Subaru will add it in a couple years when they do a mid-cycle refresh in order to keep the model "current" for a longer life cycle.
2) At least the top sport limited trim should offer a 6-spd manual instead of the old school 5-spd. I know Subaru always reserves the 6-spd for the STI, but that strategy may not be smart anymore. Plus the extra gear would improve highway MPGs to the same level as the CVT. They already have a major edge with AWD system, but I think a 6-spd offering would seal the deal for a lot of buyers.
In any case, this is likely to be my next car because an AWD 5-door hatchback with a manual tranny is a very rare combo...and it's the only combo I want!

Heh. It looks a lot like my 10 yo Focus (which i like quite a lot).
Think i might end up buying one of these by default since AWD + Stick + wagon/hatchback/crossover is a mighty small set. Will wait to see what the cargo area looks like.... if only they made the hatch as long as the sedan...
Maybe a used V50 from the like 2 years it had a stick. Or a BMW 328xi ... it's ridiculous how few options there are.

The Golf, Focus, Corolla, and Civic all have 5-speed MT's too. So no, not anachronistic

Anyone else think the grille looks like it was pulled from a Chevy Cruze?

@blueguy
The 2006-2008 base Miata comes with a 5-speed. Not sure about 2009+
