2002 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport
Why is it special?
We admit it most of us here at Edmunds.com are shameless Subie fans. OK, we're not crazy about the new looks which echo those of the head-turning WRX that was introduced at the 2001 Detroit Auto Show, with the signature trapezoidal grille and oval headlamps, but at least it'll be easy to find in a parking lot. The exterior also receives metallic-toned bumpers (which incorporate new fog lights), wheelwells and rocker sills that enhance its sporty image.
For 2002, the Outback Sport, based on the excellent-handling and excellent value Impreza line, receives the 2.5-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder powerplant from the Impreza line, which boosts horsepower from 142 to 165 and torque from 149 to 166 foot-pounds. This should substantially improve its low-end grunt. Torsional rigidity has been stiffened, and the wheels, now 16 inches, are halted by standard ABS.
Inside, you'll notice that you can find a comfortable driving position easily, thanks to a seat height adjuster and a steering column that's more adjustable than before. Metallic accents freshen up the interior; a new temperature gauge and a power outlet in the cargo area round out the changes.
Why should you care?
Subaru has always been the overlooked, under-loved ugly duckling (except for you loyal legions in New England). For those of you who require all-wheel drive but shun the SUV quagmire, this utterly affordable vehicle ($18,695), which will be available mid-March, will certainly suit all your needs. Liz Kim
