April, 1998 -- Subaru showed off its rally heritage this week at the New York International Auto Show in Manhattan. The highlight of their presentation was the unveiling of their mildly restyled 1999 Impreza 2.5RS, which is a highly de-tuned version of their world champion WRX rally car. The new 2.5RS features rally-inspired frontal styling, a new color choice (Aspen White), and engine refinements.
Subaru's focus on the Impreza 2.5RS at the New York show is designed to attenuate writers, and therefore readers, to the driving performance of Subaru's cars. We've known for a long time that Subaru's cars are fun to drive and have happily passed that news along to you. The fact that this year's 2.5RS makes more torque -- Subaru wouldn't tell us how much more -- than last year's model is simply a reinforcement of that. Oh yeah, the white 2.5RS is much less obnoxious than the blue one we tested last summer.
