Subaru Takumi Concept Improves on Impreza WRX STI's Handling

TOKYO — Subaru improved on its Impreza WRX STI by introducing a Takumi concept at the Motor Sport Japan event over the weekend.

Subaru's Takumi primarily focuses on improving the STI's handling with new springs and dampers and stiffened suspension arms. The company has also tweaked the brakes, engine and all-wheel-drive system, though details are scarce.

In keeping the focus on the handling, Subaru made only subtle exterior changes, including a black front lip and a black rear spoiler to contrast with the white body. The 18-inch aluminum wheels are also unique to the Takumi concept. The interior receives mild modifications, including a new shift knob and unique Recaro bucket seats.

The Motor Sport Japan show, held October 4-5 in Tokyo, featured display and demonstration runs of racing cars of various periods and types from Formula 1, WRC, Formula Nippon and Super GT series cars and karts.

What this means to you: Despite the STI's performance reputation, its fans are hungry for a more hard-core version. — Eric Tingwall, Correspondent
