CHERRY HILL, New Jersey — The Subaru WRX TRAX STI, with its eye-popping snow tracks system and custom matching sleigh, is a whimsical one-off done in time for the 2009 SEMA Auto Show. But we're guessing that this one ends up as the screensaver of choice for lots of snowboarders.
Vermont SportsCars built the 400-horsepower TRAX STI. It stripped the interior, lightened the shell and installed a multipoint roll cage. Additions include Recaro SPA ProRacer competition seats with a head and neck restraint system, carbon-fiber door panels and an onboard fire suppression system. The snow machine's 2.5-liter four-cylinder STI engine is tuned with a MOTEC M800 ECU.
With a nod toward Santa, the WRX STI TRAX includes a custom sleigh that runs on custom-built steel skis with torsion bar suspension. The rear of the sleigh is equipped with a large cooler and grab bar for towing snowboards. Other details include a Yakina FatCat 4 Snowboard Rack and DC Shoes XFB-C Snowboards. Subaru says this custom car was inspired by and built for DC Shoes co-founder and SRT USA driver Ken Block.
Even the glovebox has a unique touch: two Viosport POV.1 camera systems. One camera lens is mounted within the dashboard to film passengers, while the other is mounted on the roll bar to record action around the sleigh.
