- Subaru unveiled a new Forester concept at the Sydney auto show.
- Forester S-Edition pumps 259 horsepower from its 2.5-liter flat-4 turbo.
- Subaru has no immediate plans to offer a similar model in the U.S.
SYDNEY, Australia — Subaru's Forester S-Edition concept, unveiled here at the 2010 Sydney Auto Show, offers "some strong clues pointing to a new variant next year" — for the Australia market. A Subaru of America spokesman told Inside Line there are "no plans" to offer a similar model in the U.S., at least not just yet.
The Forester S-Edition is more potent than the Forester XT on which it's based. The concept's turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-4 engine — based on the company's third-generation boxer engine family — makes 259 horsepower and 256 pound-feet of torque, compared with 224 hp and 226 lb-ft for the Forester XT.
The Forester S-Edition also features a five-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters, revised sport suspension, all-wheel drive with variable torque distribution, 17-inch STI alloy wheels, drilled alloy pedals, Alcantara seat trim and S-Edition logos and badging.
Inside Line says: Those are mouth-watering output and torque figures from the new turbo flat-4. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent

I dont cate about a manual, but the US version needs a 5 or 6 speed auto, perferably a dual clutch, but I'd be happy with this model. The Outback is too big, plus I ski so I like a turbo for altitude ( and to drive too fast...), but 4 gears??? its not 1985 anymore Subaru! Also dont even think of using one of those awful CV"s with the turbo. I also like the sportier suspension tuning.
Bring it here (USA) my 96 has 302,000. I need some new wheels soon!!

Subie really has to get the manual back into the turbo Forester, by S-edition or crook.

The fender mounted mirror is not for offroading. It allows you to see down the side of the vehicle. Properly adjusted it covers the area not covered by the main mirror.
Its simple trig. Draw a box (as if you were looking at a car from above) and put two mirrors on it as this vehicle does. Now draw reflection lines based on where the driver sits. You'll see two mirrors provides much more coverage than a single mirror ever could. That is why you'll find these types of mirror in larger vehicles. Ironically, in the extremely safety conscious USA we don't get these due to aestetics. We just want our vehicles to be safe in crashes, not designed to avoid them in the first place.

@ davicho
I believe the "silly little mirror mounted on the left fender" allows you to see further around the vehicle, most likely for off-roading purposes (not sure of this vehicles off-raod potential).

I would be happy with a Forester Turbo with the 224 HP and the 5 speed manual.

Either bring it with a proper manual, or don't bring it at all.

Anyone else think it's odd that they're coming out with a model called the Subaru Forester S-Edition. Seems a bit too close to "Forester Sedition," as in:
se·di·tion (s-dshn)
n.
1. Conduct or language inciting rebellion against the authority of a state.
2. Insurrection; rebellion.

Looks nice...minus that silly little mirror mounted on the left fender. Call me naive but what is the purpose for a secondary mirror mounted so far in the front of the vehicle???
