2008 Paris Auto Show Preview: Subaru Unveils Boxer Diesel Versions of Forester and Impreza

GUNMA, Japan — Subaru will unveil boxer diesel versions of its Forester and Impreza at the 2008 Paris Auto Show next month. This is the all-new 2.0-liter engine that Subaru introduced earlier this year on the Legacy Outback.

The Forester's 2.0-liter horizontally opposed diesel makes 145 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque and attains an impressive 37 mpg. In the five-door Impreza, the engine will make 147 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Both models feature Subaru's new six-speed manual gearbox.

The diesel Forester will go on sale in the U.K. later this month, but the Impreza won't be available until January.

At the moment, these diesel vehicles are not targeted for U.S. sale.

What this means to you: Fuel-efficient diesel engines will be Subaru's focus at the upcoming Paris show. — Mike Lysaght, Correspondent
