2009 Tokyo Auto Show Preview: Subaru Exiga 2.0GT STI

    2 Ratings

TOKYO — Subaru Tecnica International breathed some serious life into the Impreza WRX. Now, the Japanese automaker's in-house motorsports arm hopes to repeat the magic with a new limited-production, high-performance edition of the automaker's home-market wagon, the Subaru Exiga 2.0GT STI for the 2009 Tokyo Auto Show.

The seven-passenger people hauler will be unveiled as a "concept" at the show, but Subaru confirms that the Exiga 2.0GT STI is scheduled to go on sale shortly in Japan. Sadly, there appear to be no immediate provisions for a North American variant.

As the name implies, the hotted-up Exiga will feature Subaru's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, with some STI secret sauce applied to the inner workings to tease out the boxer's full potential.

STI also will apply the usual tweaks to suspension, steering and brakes to push handling to the limit. Subaru will further dress up the tall-roof crossover with a front spoiler, side skirts, alloy wheels and sporty exhaust tips.

Seriously, it's getting out of hand what's available in other countries and not in the US of A. I'm a current WRX owner that just added a new mouth to the family. And I've got dogs, thus a wagon is nice. So I'm the perfect demographic for this car. I want to know what study these corporations are doing that suggest the US isn't ready for a decent sized performance wagon (not something as small as the 5 door Impreza and variants). I'd snap this car up. Looks like it's the BMW 335i Sportswagon for me... oh right, that car is not available here either. Anybody seen a good deal on a nice used V70R around... or maybe a 1972 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser??

I think I'd be happier not knowing about all the awesome cars we can't have in the US. :( Help me feel better - what awesome cars do we make here that Japan and Europe can't get?
