- Subaru releases photos and specifications on a near-production-ready "concept" version of the new BRZ coupe.
- The BRZ Concept is being shown in STI trim.
- The concept is powered by a normally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine.
TOKYO — Subaru has released images and specifications on a near-production-ready "concept" version of the new BRZ coupe. The BRZ Concept STI debuts later this month at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show, with the final production version due to bow in December at the Tokyo show.
The BRZ, which goes on sale next spring in the U.S., is a companion to the rear-wheel-drive Toyota FT-86, which will be marketed in the U.S. as the Scion FR-S.
The BRZ was unveiled in concept form earlier this year at the 2011 Geneva Auto Show. A so-called "technology concept" was shown in September at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show.
The final BRZ concept for Los Angeles will feature a normally aspirated version of Subaru's FA-series 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine.
Subaru said the BRZ Concept STI measures 166.7 inches long, 70.9 inches wide and 50.4 inches tall, with a wheelbase of 101.2 inches. It will ride on 215/45R18 front tires and 225/45R18 rear tires.
In comparison, the 2012 Subaru Impreza WRX STI is more than a foot longer and 7 inches taller, at 180.3 inches overall, with a wheelbase of 103.3 inches. Width is 70.7 inches and height is 57.9 inches.
Inside Line says: Not quite as awkward-looking as the FT-86.

Very promising.. Take off that gaudy rear wing and the rear end looks real nice..

Just don't be a pig like FRS with 2800+ gruelling pounds. But if anything, I would much rather be with a car branded as Subaru than idiotic and embarassing Scion.

I agree its a cool looking car. I would not want that spoiler on it but I would want the AWD and a turbo. I guess Subaru is trying to stay in the under 25k price range. Now if they offered a 32k 2.5 AWD turbo.......... now your talking a tuner car with lots of potential for the strip and track.

This car should be an instant classic when subaru drops the STI bomb on us. Very grateful Toyota gave Subaru an opportunity to give this car some justice. I was immediately disappointed when news was out that they would release this car under their Scion umbrella. I've owned a XB before, so I understand why someone would choose the Scion version over the Subaru version...but I purchased the XB at the time for a business vehicle, not for spirited driving of any kind. Any enthusiast would wisely choose the Subaru over the Scion.

Is this a rendering? if not then remove the aftermarket parts and what we'll get is a car that looks cleaner and better than the FT-86/FR-S.
Now I can't find any reason why I'd choose the Toyota especially since this will be more powerful (well that's what I've heard) and the Toyota one will be sporting a Scion badge.
I see the Scion/Toyota will be the "posers" version.

Good looking car, I think.
And I would definitely buy the Subaru version over the Toyota, even w/the traditionally weaker resale.
Why?
So I wouldn't have to be seen in a Toyota -- for 40 years the most congenitally dull and lifeless driving cars on the planet.
With the exception of Lexus (or Lexi) -- which are also Toyota.

Like it, but I also like the Toyota version...

I did not realize the STI was available as a low slung sport coupe. I will check it out right now, thanks for the tip.

The Vibe was much better looking than the Matrix.

Its not similar, it's identical. It's the Pontiac Vibe/Toyota Matrix all over again, but with even less physical differentiation.
I think the Tc is better looking, but RWD>FWD, so even at a slight premium I would have the Subayota over the Tc.
