LOS ANGELES — Subaru formally unveiled the BRZ Concept STI, a near-production-ready version of its new rear-wheel-drive, boxer-engined sport coupe, here at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show. The final production BRZ will be introduced late this month at the 2011 Tokyo Auto Show and goes on sale next spring in the U.S.

The BRZ is a companion to the rear-wheel-drive Toyota FT-86, which will be sold in the U.S. as the Scion FR-S.

Among the BRZ Concept STI's features are a hexagonal lower front grille, "hawk eye" headlamps, fin-shaped foglamps, front spoiler, rear wing, flared fenders, rear diffuser, twin exhaust pipes and carbon-fiber roof. The car is finished in WR Blue Pearl II, a new variation of Subaru's signature performance color.

The concept rides on 18-inch STI wheels and performance tires (215/45R18 front, 225/45R18 rear), and features Brembo brakes and an STI-tuned suspension.

The BRZ Concept STI is the latest in a series of concepts leading up to the Tokyo show premiere of the production model. The car was unveiled in concept form earlier this year at the 2011 Geneva Auto Show. A so-called "technology concept" was shown in September at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show.

The final BRZ concept for Los Angeles features a normally aspirated version of Subaru's FA-series 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine.

Subaru said the BRZ Concept STI measures 166.7 inches long, 70.9 inches wide and 50.4 inches tall, with a wheelbase of 101.2 inches.

Inside Line says: Eye-catching, to say the least.

I think I'll wait a year or so and see if they put the 1.6L Direct Injected Turbo (280-300 HP) engine from the next gen WRX STi in this.

I'll take the FR-S Toyota in Subby BLUE and badge it as a Subby...since its subby engine/chasis.

pretty sure that subies engineers have already said this one is about finesse. if you want balls to the walls, they'll give you an sti sedan or hatch with awd.

it doesnt need to have 300 hp to be a good drive.

Looks good enough to me... Granted a 4 year design cycle should have produced automotive pornography.  Like the LF-A.

The two pictures of the side profile are pretty epic. The bulging fenders, low hood, and angle of the rear glass all look really exciting and are proportioned perfectly. My favorite side profile used to be the Mazda RX-8, but I think this design tops it.

As others have mentioned though, I'm not a fan of the spoiler. However, if you ignore the spoiler and really look at the rear of the car you will notice the bodywork forms into almost a little duck tail spoiler that is quite nice looking. The large spoiler must be for the STi concept while other versions of the BRZ are probably going to get the nice clean look that you see beneath it.
