"Cracks may develop in the fuel hose connection on the outlet pressure side of the fuel pump," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "Fuel can leak from the hose connection. A fuel leak, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire."
In other documents filed with the federal government, Subaru said the problem was "initially reported because of fuel smell" due to cracks in the fuel pump nipple. "No fires, crashes, injuries or deaths have been reported," the automaker said.
The recall involves both turbocharged and non-turbo Baja models.
Subaru dealers will replace the fuel pump bracket, including all nipples, with a new and stronger design part. The recall is expected to begin in September. Owners can contact Subaru at (800) 782-2783.
