2004 Subaru Baja Turbo
What's Special About It?
A Subaru Baja weighs 3,605 pounds; that's about 40 pounds more than a Buick LeSabre. The Baja's standard 2.5-liter flat four engine makes 165 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque, this might be enough in a 3,000-pound Impreza but it's taxed when propelling the pudgier Baja. A fix has arrived in the form of a turbocharged version of that "boxer" four. Subaru's trademark hood scoop announces the presence of the force-fed four. Utilizing an intercooler as well as variable valve timing, the 2.5 cranks out 210 hp and, even more impressive, 235 lb-ft of torque. Though no performance figures were available, we imagine that healthy infusion will make a world of difference.
In addition to the turbo motor, the Baja Turbo comes with drive-by-wire throttle control, unique wheels, monochrome paint scheme, leather seating and a Momo steering wheel.
Along with the introduction of the Turbo model comes a higher suspension for all Bajas; ground clearance is now 8.4 inches a full inch more than last year.
Why Should You Care?
