2003 Subaru Baja
What's special about it?
The Baja can be thought of as a small crew cab pickup with a flip-down bed access panel behind the rear seats, much like the Chevy Avalanche's midgate. Or it can be thought of as a Legacy wagon with a pickup bed in place of an enclosed cargo compartment that has a flip-down...You get the idea.
All the requisite styling features, such as large foglights, aggressive body cladding and 16-inch alloy wheels are present. A roof rack, bed liner and bed tie-down hooks increase the functionality and should appeal to the mountain bike and kayak types who make up the Baja's target market.
Subaru's trusty 165-horsepower 2.5-liter flat four powers this crossover vehicle. And no, the H6 will not be available in the Baja. A bed extender makes it possible to carry two mountain bikes in the bed without getting into the cabin, which is configured to seat four people. Should you need more bed length, Subaru's "Switchback" panel behind the seats flips open to extend the bed length to nearly 7.5 feet.
Why should you care?
If you like the idea of an Outback wagon with the flexibility of an open (and extendable) cargo area, this may be the rig for you. - John DiPietro
