    What is it?

    What's special about it?
Subaru listened to its customers and has added a few choice features to the 2007 B9 Tribeca. The company has granted owners' wishes for driver-seat memory, satellite radio and an MP3-player hookup. Only Limited models get memory settings, but all Tribecas get prewiring for XM and an MP3 jack.

Turns out customers also wanted more chrome. "Customization has become a big part of the SUV segment," Corporate Communications Manager Michael Whelan told us. "We've even had some requests from customers and dealers for chrome wheels."

So the new '07 B9 Tribeca Special Edition has chrome 18s with 255/55R-18 Goodyear tires. It also has a mesh chrome grille that we find garish, and it's all set up for a year's subscription to XM Satellite Radio. This package is available on all Tribecas and you'll pay $1,295 extra to get it.

Curiously, regular 2007 Tribecas actually have less chrome than before. The slats on the nose are now black, which gives the SUV a less imposing face.

Subaru has made some substantive safety changes to its midsize SUV as well. The side curtain airbag system is now equipped with a roll sensor to ensure that the airbags deploy in the event of a rollover. There's also a BrakeAssist feature that detects a panic stop and supplements the driver's efforts in case he doesn't apply enough force.

Backing up is always hazardous when you have a full load of passengers blocking your view, so Limited models with the navigation system now include a rearview monitor. If you can't sink that much money into your SUV, Subaru dealers can now sell you audible rear parking sensors as an accessory. A remote vehicle starter is another new accessory.

Although we never had any complaints about the B9 Tribeca's ride quality, Subaru has revised the springs, shocks and stabilizer bars to provide a smoother, quieter ride, particularly over rough roads. The company says handling is unaffected.

    What's Edmunds' Take?
We would have liked to see Subaru address the B9 Tribeca's sluggish acceleration and handling in this early-cycle refresh, but apparently we'll have to wait a few more years for that. However, safety features like a roll sensor and rear parking assist are important on an SUV, and we're glad the company has added them. Not quite so glad, though, about all that chrome on the Special Edition. — Erin Riches
