Subaru B9 Scrambler Concept
What's Special About It?
Hybrid-powered cars in the 21st century are getting to be about as common as tail fins in the late 1950s. Still, leave it to Subaru to make a hybrid electric concept that gets us car people excited. What if you could use all that electric motor power and torque to improve fuel economy and performance? Well that's exactly what the B9's aim is. Power comes primarily from an electric motor with a 2.0-liter SOHC flat-four kicking in when extra power is needed and acting as a generator at the same time. The batteries are made of a new high-density manganese lithium-ion compound that makes it possible to have a high-energy power cell in as little space as possible. These batteries (called NLE) offer longer life and more flexibility than traditional batteries as cells can be quickly added or subtracted to accommodate the vehicle's design. As you would expect from Subaru, power is distributed to all four wheels and the ground clearance can be raised or lowered through the adjustable air suspension.
Although opinions may vary, this has got to be the coolest-looking Subaru in a long time. The car's name and front-end treatment pay homage to Subaru's aircraft heritage. The center grille looks like a jet intake while the headlight design and side grille have a sort of wing look. From the side the B9 has a slight wedge shape giving it a real sports car profile. Large wheel arches give the car an even more aggressive look and the lower part of the body is made of a dent-resistant material to prevent chipping from rocks.
Why Should You Care?
With the success of the WRX, it's about time Subaru made an open-top, true sports roadster. Even if you could not care less about electric cars or hybrid technology, you can still admire the B9 Scrambler and Subaru for offering environmentally friendly technology in a car that doesn't bore you to tears. Try to imagine this car with the WRX motor and really cool name; betcha we've got your attention now. Brian Moody
