ZEEWOLDE, Netherlands — Spyker is putting a new car into production that is inspired by its GT2 Le Mans racing car. The C8 Laviolette LM85 comes complete with V8 power, look-at-me orange paint and ultra-limited production numbers.

Power for the LM85 comes from Audi's 4.2-liter V8, making 400 horsepower and mated to a six-speed Getrag gearbox. Weight is managed by using aluminum for body panels and chassis. Six-piston brake calipers are tucked behind 19-inch black powder-coated wheels.

The Spyker is slathered in orange paint with gunmetal accents that stretch the length of the car, forming an S logo. Inside, black Alcantara and leather are trimmed in contrasting orange stitching, while the instrument panel is made of aluminum. True to racing form, the production C8 Laviolette is equipped with a dash-mounted kill switch, fire-resistant floor mats and an extinguisher system on the passenger's side.

Buyers will also receive a Chronoswiss watch with orange crocodile strap and a VIP package to the 2009 24 Hours of Le Mans. Even the no-cost options play on the racing theme, including sponsor stickers from the Spyker Le Mans car and a package that puts the name and national flag of the driver on the side of the car.

Spyker says it will build no more than 24 units of the C8 Laviolette, which will be available in either left- or right-hand drive. The first two C8 Laviolette cars produced will be going to two far-flung locations. One will be displayed in late October in Saudi Arabia, at the opening event for Spyker's dealership and at the 2008 Jeddah Motor Show. The other will debut at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

What this means to you: Spyker's new car blurs the line between racing and road car a bit more. — Eric Tingwall, Correspondent
