Hertz To Offer Smart Fortwo EV

    PARK RIDGE, New Jersey — Hertz Global EV, a unit of Hertz Global Holdings, said it will add the Smart Fortwo Electric Drive to its growing fleet of hybrid and electric vehicles.

    The electric city car will be available to rent this month through the Connect by Hertz car-sharing program in New York City and early next year will be added to Hertz Rent-a-Car locations in San Francisco and Washington, D.C.

    Hertz previously had ordered electric vehicles from Nissan and Coda Automotive.

    Smart has been putting the 2011 Fortwo ED into selected fleets in the U.S., in advance of production in 2012 of the third-generation edition.

    Inside Line says: Hertz Global EV said it plans to be "the first company to provide a range of all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles and charging stations on a car-sharing and rental basis" in locations around the world. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
