2008 British Auto Show Preview: Seat Ibiza SportCoupe

MARTORELL, Spain — Seat's redesigned Ibiza five-door has not been out long, and already Volkswagen's Spanish subsidiary is aiming to provide a sporty stablemate. That's a role filled by the new three-door Ibiza SportCoupé, a car scheduled to make its debut at the 2008 British Auto Show.

VW is using the Ibiza SC to premiere its "supermini" engineering base that promises "crisp handling and a composed ride." The sporty three-door sits 0.7-inch lower than its five-door brother and is the first car of its class to offer VW's seven-speed DSG double-clutch gearbox. It's an option on the version with the 104-horsepower 1.6-liter engine.

On the outside, Seat has taken cues from design boss Luc Donckerwolke's "Arrow Design" theme, which results in lowered headlights and a repositioned grille for more style points. Engine and trim packages are TBD, but Seat says that when the upcoming FR and Cupra versions of the Ibiza debut, they can be expected to be inspired by the SC's sporty styling.

What this means to you: Seat enthusiasts should be satisfied with this lively new model, which should tide them over until the promised new powerhouse versions come out. — Paul Tassi, Correspondent
