Scion Announces Pricing, On-Sale Date for xD Release Series 1.0

TORRANCE, California — Scion has announced that its xD Release Series 1.0 will go on sale in June, priced at $14,550 for the base model. The car will be limited to a total production of 2,000 units, the automaker said.

The Scion xD Release Series 1.0 — which Scion is calling xD RS 1.0 for short — comes in a suitably sporty Hot Lava paint job to set off the DAMD body kit, rear spoiler, lowering springs from Toyota Racing Development (TRD) and special Release Series wheel covers.

The car costs $1,999 more than the base price of the standard xD at $14,550 for the manual-transmission model and $15,350 for the automatic, plus a $620 destination charge.

This is the third limited-edition car that Scion is releasing in 2008. The others are the xB Release Series 5.0, which came out in February, and the tC Release Series 4.0, which came out in March.

What this means to you: Scion has figured out the youth market, the tuner market — and how to make a product desirable to both groups by limiting access. — Laura Sky Brown, Correspondent
