- Scion unveils its 2013 FR-S sport coupe along with an FR-S racecar.
- The FR-S is based on the Toyota 86 sports car.
- Powering the FR-S is a Subaru-based 2.0-liter flat-4 engine that makes 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque.
DETROIT — Toyota formally unveiled the 2013 Scion FR-S — the U.S. sibling of the recently unveiled Toyota 86 sports car — along with an FR-S racecar jointly developed by Scion Racing and longtime Toyota tuner GReddy.
The 600-horsepower Scion FR-S racecar will compete in the 2012 Formula DRIFT series with veteran driver Ken Gushi at the wheel.
The 2013 FR-S coupe goes on sale this spring, although Scion is offering the chance to take delivery early with its First 86 program. Scion fans will have 8 hours and 6 minutes to put in their bids to be among the early buyers at www.ScionFirst86.com, starting at noon Eastern on January 12.
The 2013 FR-S hews closely to the specs of the Japan-market Toyota 86. Power is supplied to the rear wheels by a Subaru-based 2.0-liter direct-injected flat-4 engine rated at 200 hp and 151 pound-feet of torque. The engine can be mated with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters.
The car rides on 215/45R17 performance tires.
A new feature is BeSpoke, a connected infotainment audio system powered by Pioneer's Zypr.
Inside Line says: Makes more sense for the Toyota brand than for Scion.

Highly awaited 2013 Scion FR-S sibling model will goes on sale in this spring and the price of entry model will be around $24,930. I heard that FR-S is quite good for around 22/30 mpg along with manual transmission, or 25/34mpg along with automatic box.

It's a lightweight RWD with good power and from all reports fine handling. The pricing reports I've seen have been closer to $25k than $30k. For me, the big deal is that if this thing sells then the next Mustang might come in closer to 3200 lbs and with an independent suspension. That might be pretty good timing for the mid-life crisis I'm planning about that time. :-)

I don't really get the hype for this car or the Subaru equivalent (actually I hardly understand it as a Subaru at all). 200 HP, OK not great. Looks good, especially from the rear, but not outstanding. Parts of interior look good, but middle top of dash looks really awkward. Price is going to be "under $30k" (which I assume to mean 29,995) which with a few options means low 30's. That is a lot for essentially a two seater knock around car. RWD is nice and maybe its only real unique selling point, and the fact that it is not American iron (i.e. Mustang/Camaro/Challenger) for those so inclined to prefer Asian.

Nice car. The concept aggressive hood and grille should have made it to the fianl production.
But this is redneck ultraconservative bible hugger country we live in. SO, unfortunately Toyota had to bring it down a notch.

I've said this before, this looks like a really nice car. Like everyone here, though I could offer something that I'd prefer for this car: more torque. I don't think the HP needs to move very much, but 190-200 lb-ft would take this another rung up the perfection ladder in my opinion. I actually think that when they offer a turbo option that the torque will jump much more than the HP.

Not overwrought, overstyled, overpowered, or overpriced.
Everything that you want...nothing that you don't. That's engineering, not Gran Turismo 5.
Well done Subayota.
