    What Is It?
    2004 Saturn Ion Red Line

    What's Special About It?
Saturn's new Red Line series is an attempt to lure performance-minded buyers who might not otherwise consider the domestic brand. The Ion Red Line coupe uses a special 2.0-liter version of the standard Ecotec engine that benefits from the addition of a supercharger and an air-to-water intercooler to boost power to an estimated 200 horses. A beefed-up five-speed transmission with close ratio gearing and a short throw shifter channel the power to a set of 17-inch alloy wheels with low-profile 45-series performance tires. The track-tuned suspension features revised springs, shocks and bushings while a free-flow exhaust gives the car a more serious sound. Sport seats are added inside while the exterior gets revised front and rear fascias. Production starts early next year.

    Why Should You Care?
If you're looking for performance on the cheap, the Ion Red Line is right up your alley. With a likely sticker price under $20,000, this 200-horsepower coupe should be one of the best bang-for-your-buck cars on the road when it hits the streets early next year. — Ed Hellwig
