The S5S Raptor, a midengine two-seater powered by a 650-horsepower supercharged 5.0-liter engine, is tentatively slated to commence production in 2010, priced from around $185,000.
The Raptor represents a collaboration between Saleen's engineering team and the design group at ASC. Both companies are owned by Hancock Park Associates, a Los Angeles-based private equity firm.
Saleen says the S5S Raptor, which directs its 630 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox, can run on E85 ethanol and is capable of jetting from zero to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds, with a top speed in excess of 200 mph. Saleen also plans to offer a sequential gearbox with paddle shifters.
The rigid aluminum chassis features double wishbones front and rear and integrates stability and traction control, four-wheel disc brakes with 15-inch front rotors and six-pot calipers, and a set of 20-inch forged aluminum wheels wrapped with Pirelli Rosso performance tires: 275/35ZR20s in the front and 315/35ZR20s in the rear.
Saleen's Gurney Signature Edition Mustang, which also is being unveiled here, will be produced in a limited run of 300 cars. All will house a supercharged 465-hp 4.6-liter V8, tuned Racecraft suspension and Pirelli Corsa tires.
The car is painted to resemble Gurney's 1969 Trans Am racing car, complete with "stinger" hood and "duckbill" rear spoiler, and comes in a choice of Torch Red, Performance White or Vista Blue. The first cars should begin reaching dealers in April.
