GUANGZHOU, China — Shanghai Auto, China's largest automaker and a partner of General Motors and Volkswagen, said its new self-developed MG6 sedan will go into production in the U.K. in late 2010.
The MG6, a four-door hatchback that shares many of its components with Shanghai Auto's Roewe 550 midsize sedan, was unveiled in prototype form earlier this year at the 2009 Shanghai Auto Show. The final production version was introduced Monday at the 2009 Guangzhou Auto Show.
Shanghai Auto acquired the former MG Rover plant in Longbridge, England, when it swallowed up smaller rival Nanjing Auto in 2007.
The MG6, which was developed primarily in the U.K., will be manufactured and sold initially in China, with the U.K. plant supplying European customers, beginning in 2011.
The car was launched here at the auto show with an updated version of the MG badge, incorporating the original Morris Garages name.

This is a good move to help keep this car true to its British heritage. Now let's wait and see if they can break MGs tradition of letting their cars become outdated before they ends production.
