2008 Geneva Auto Show Preview: Saab Confirms Debut of New Concept

GENEVA — General Motors Europe on Tuesday confirmed that March 3 is the date of the world debut of an "entirely new concept car" from Saab at the 2008 Geneva Auto Show. The automaker said the concept "shows a further step in [Saab's] continuing product range extension."

European sources tell Inside Line that the concept is expected to be a look at the upcoming Saab 9-1X, a new entry-level model for the Swedish brand.

Last summer, Saab General Manager Steve Shannon told Inside Line that Saab will launch a premium compact below the 9-3 called the 9-1. The 9-1X is expected to incorporate styling cues from the Saab Aero X concept, which debuted two years ago in Geneva to widespread acclaim. The unveiling of the new Saab concept in early March should reveal such details as whether the new 9-1 will be a three-door or a five-door hatchback.

While GM's Tuesday announcement was skimpy on details about the new Saab concept, it is anticipated that the bulk of the design work on the vehicle is coming out of GM Europe's design center in Germany, the same studio responsible for Opel designs.

What this means to you: Expect the Saab concept to be one of the showstoppers, especially if it harks back to the Aero X. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
