2009 Geneva Auto Show: Ruf Dakara

    1 Rating

GENEVA — Ruf, the fabled German tuner of all things Porsche, showed a new edition of the Cayenne called Dakara, evoking the equally legendary desert rally, at the 2009 Geneva Auto Show.

Don't get the wrong idea about this Cayenne, which has been thoroughly Ruffed up inside and out.

An aero body kit includes new front and rear fascias, including a rear diffuser, and adds girth by way of extended wheel arches that wrap around massive 22-inch meats on five-spoke alloy rims. And, yes, those headlamps are meant to resemble those on the 911 Carrera.

There is plenty of high-zoot technology onboard, too, from surround-view cameras to carbon-composite brakes. An ultra-premium multimedia system bundles a CD/DVD changer and high-end speakers with a built-in TV and wireless Internet access.

With 592 horsepower and 659 pound-feet of torque on tap, the turbo V8 enables the Dakara to gallop from zero to 60 mph in less than 4.8 seconds — on pavement. We're not certain what the comparable figure is on desert sand.

Inside Line says: They must have thought Ruf Parisa sounded too sissified. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
