Spy Shots: Rolls-Royce RR4

MUNICH, Germany — Spy photographers have nabbed new shots of the upcoming "baby Rolls," internally code-named RR4. Expect it to slot between the top-line Phantom and the BMW 7 Series, since Rolls-Royce executives have already confirmed that the new car will be priced in the $250,000-$280,000 range, considerably below the Phantom's $340,000-430,000 asking price.

While it shares elements of the platform from the 7 Series, the RR4 is actually wider, taller and longer, with a longer wheelbase as well. The RR4 is expected to compete directly with the Bentley Continental Flying Spur. Rolls is keeping mum on engines, but the RR4 may sport a detuned version of the Phantom's 453-horsepower 6.75-liter V12, the 407-hp 4.4-liter twin-turbo from BMW's X6 crossover or possibly the 441-horsepower 6.0-liter V12 from BMW's 760i.

Some reports even indicate that Rolls-Royce is considering a diesel.

What this means to you: If a BMW 7 Series just isn't quite exclusive enough, but a Phantom is a little over the top, Rolls-Royce is looking for you. — Doug Lloyd, Senior Copy Editor
