A Look Fit for the Gods: One-Off Pininfarina Hyperion Shown at Pebble Beach

PEBBLE BEACH, California — Pininfarina's latest creation, called the Hyperion, is based on the Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe and made its world debut at the concours d'elegance here.

Named after one of the Titans in Greek mythology, this vehicle stands out among the crowd. Its driving position has been moved back nearly 16 inches, giving an extreme two-seater look and making room for two storage compartments in front of the windscreen.

With a shorter rear end and extended roof, the Hyperion looks like a prewar car. Despite the changes to the body, its original Drophead interior remains. The car's lightweight shell is made mostly of carbon fiber, except for the wood doors, which were constructed by craftsmen who specialize in making luxury boats.

A 6.75-liter V12 engine is standard in the Rolls, which boasts 453 horsepower and 531 pound-feet of torque. Pininfarina must think the 5.7-second 0-60-mph time is plenty fast, because it has not opted to install any performance upgrades on this one-off coupe.

The vehicle was designed by the Special Projects division of Pininfarina for a Rolls-Royce collector named Roland Hall, who dedicated the car to the memory of the company's late chairman and CEO, Andrea Pininfarina, killed in a road accident earlier this month.

What this means to you: Pininfarina succeeds in making a unique ride that creates its own sense of style. — Mike Lysaght, Correspondent
